Baked doughnuts no sugar flavoured with orange

This recipe comes from my friend Rosetta who is originally from Calabria. She bakes all the time and whenever I visit her her house smells divine: whether it is cookies, pizza, delicious homemade cakes or porcini mushrooms Rosetta always has something delicious ready for you.

These cookies are similar to the Italian Taralli biscuits, properly called wine cookies only that in this case there is no wine in them as I have substituted it with freshly squeezed orange juice in order to serve them to my children too. Of course you can use white or red wine instead if you prefer. These biscuits have no sugar inside they are only coated with it making it quite a healthy snack.

I have lots of oranges and lemons at home as we do lots of squeezing. I normally start my day with the juice of a lemon, hot water and grated ginger instead of a coffee and it is incredible how much energized I feel soon after. Lemons help flushing out toxins and they are extremely good for your body. If you search online you will find lots of good information about the benefits of lemons.

Of course later I must have my daily fix of espresso too! I would not be Italian if I didn’t!

Have a good weekend everyone and if you have time give these biscuits a try, they are great!

  • Prep Time : 30 minutes
  • Cook Time : 15 minutes
  • Yield : 23

Ingredients

  • flour – 300 g – 2 + 1/2 cups
  • bicarbonate of soda – 2 tsp
  • olive oil – 100 ml – 3.4 fl oz
  • oranges – the juice of 2
  • lemon zest – the zest of 1
  • granulated sugar – for coating

Instructions

In a bowl mix the olive oil, the juice of the oranges and the lemon zest.

Add the sifted flour and the bicarbonate of soda and working with your hands form a ball. Let it rest for 20 minutes.

Starting off with small pieces of dough roll it with the palm of your hand on your work top and make “logs” then shape into circles.

You can twist the logs before joining the two ends for a prettier effect.

Roll the rings in granulated sugar and place them on your baking tray lined with parchment paper.

Bake at 180 C or 350F for 15 minutes or until golden.

Mmm.. they really are MOREISH!!

  1. Dear Alida,
Love these with the wine, but never thought of making them without and add the orange juice. I have to try these, I can just taste them now…delicious…I also like the idea because the children can enjoy them as well…Simple and the little sugar on top adds a little sweetness to the orange juice flavor…I also like the idea that the kids can help make these…Thank you dear friend for a wonderful and fun recipe. Have a spectacular weekend…

  2. I made these last night and they are very yummy. My logs took ages to make though, because my dough kept wanting to separate as I was rolling them. The lemon/orange flavour is very nice and I love that they are only sugar-coated, it’s an otherwise no-sugar recipe šŸ™‚ Next time I might try just cutting them with cookie cutters.

    1. Hi Olivia, I am pleased you tried this recipe. Rolling the pastry sometimes can be tricky. I always find that depending on the type of flour I use I get different results, even if I use different brands sometimes. I like these because they are low in sugar too and using cookie cutters instead of rolling the pastry is a good tip. Ciao!
