One of the fruits that really seems to shout SUMMER is watermelon. So refreshing, delicious and fun to eat. I would never pass summer without sinking my teeth into that juicy red pulp, so sweet and so delicious! And when you start it really is hard to stop!
But what’s really good about it is that it is so low in calories, watermelon is a great snack option, very rich in vitamin A in the form of carotenes. In watermelon the carotene is called lycopene which is the dyeing substance that gives this fruit its bright red colour. Tomatoes are also rich in lycopene and that’s where they get their red colour too.
Watermelons also contain lots of vitamin B, potassium and lots of minerals and they are perfect for summer months as they contain more than 90% water.
You can enjoy it on its own or in a fruit salad but you can also make refreshing desserts like Italian granita.
And watermelon is a favourite among children! We had as much watermelon as we could fit! Sooo good :-))
Happy watermelon feast!

Hi Alida,
Watermelon, one of my favorites…I love the sweet, juicy taste, especially on a hot day. It is so refreshing. Here in the states we have watermelon that is seedless. They have these little tiny white seeds, but it is ok to eat them. I for one do not like these. I love the watermelons that have the black seeds in them. To me they are tastier and sweeter. The others are like hybrids. But anyway, I love the photos and your children look like they are having a blast. The melons in the market look so lovely, like the grapes and other fruit. So colorful. Thanks for reminding me about the watermelon. Have a great rest of the week dear friend…

Oh I do love watermelon season. As a matter of fact, August is Watermelon Month here in the states. It’s so versatile too. Sure looks like the kids are enjoying it:) Now you have me craving watermelon and it’s only 8:30 in the morning, lol…
Thanks for sharing, Alida…I’ll be back to blogging on Sunday:)

You’ve got me craving watermelon now Alida. I don’t think I’ve had it for years. Yet you are right, it’s so delicious and good for you too. I used to eat loads of it when I lived in Egypt, but it’s hard to get good ones here.
