Roasted Sardines Recipe with breadcrumbs

One of the things I absolutely want to eat when back in Italy is sardines.

They taste of the sea and they are one of the oily fish which contain stacks of omega 3.  Also they are quite cheap and if they are fresh they are divine.

There are lots of recipes with sardines. I like them fried but also done in the oven and with very little effort and mess. The way I usually do them is like this:

  • Prep Time : 30 minutes
  • Cook Time : 30 minutes

Ingredients

  • fresh sardines – 1 Kg
  • breadcrumbs
  • olive oil
  • salt – optional

Instructions

This is very simple:

Gut the sardines and rinse under the tap

Lay them in a colander to drain the excess water

On a baking tray covered with baking paper sprinkle some breadcrumbs and lay the sardines on it.

Sprinkle with a little salt, breadcrumbs and olive oil

Cook for 30 minutes at 200C or 390F.

Enjoy them with some fresh salad.

  1. That looks so rustic and delicious – and I'm so jealous that you're able to enjoy fresh sardines! I don't think I've ever had the fresh variety, just the canned. Which are so sad and so far from fresh fish 😉

  2. Alida, what a nice post! I love sardines not only when in Italy! I've noticed the smaller the fish, the flavor is better.

  3. Beautiful. It´s been a while since I don´t prepare them because I know it takes time to clean them. I invite you to read the recipe of preserve of fresh anchovies in my blog, if you are patient to clean them….. I suppose the same recipe applies to sardines. Un beso,
